Document Spotlight: The Florida Marriage License

A marriage license may not be the most glamorous part of a wedding day, but it is one of the most important documents involved.

Before getting married in Florida, couples must complete the marriage license application process and meet the state's requirements. In Bay County, the application can be started online, and applicants can also complete it using public terminals at the Clerk's Office.

But the process doesn't end with the ceremony.

Once the marriage ceremony has been performed, the officiant is responsible for returning the completed marriage license to the Clerk of the Circuit Court's Office where the license was obtained within 10 days.

That's the part many couples don't think about when they're planning their wedding — and it's one of the responsibilities I take seriously as a wedding officiant.

This week, I made that trip to the Bay County Clerk's Office to return the marriage license from a Friday wedding ceremony.

One ceremony completed. One important document properly returned. Another Magnolia Moment.
