FAQ Friday: What do we need to apply for a marriage license in Florida?

Florida Marriage License Requirements: What Couples Need to Know Before Saying “I Do”

Planning a Florida wedding?

Whether you're a Florida resident or planning a destination wedding along the Gulf Coast, one of the first things to think about is your Florida marriage license.

Before your ceremony takes place, you'll need to make sure your marriage license requirements are taken care of.

What do you need to apply for a Florida marriage license?

For applicants age 18 and older applying in Bay County, Florida, both parties must provide valid government-issued photo identification. Acceptable identification includes a driver's license, state-issued identification card, passport, or military ID.

Both applicants also need to know their Social Security numbers. You do not need to bring your Social Security cards.

If either applicant has been previously married, you'll also need to know the full date of the divorce, annulment, or death of the previous spouse. The Bay County Clerk states that the divorce decree, annulment papers, or death certificate do not need to be brought for this purpose.

Can you start the application online?

Yes.

The Bay County Clerk's Office allows couples to begin the marriage-license application online. After submitting the application, a transaction number is provided to bring with you.

That's especially helpful for couples visiting Panama City for a destination wedding because you can take care of part of the process before heading to the Clerk's Office.

How much does a Florida marriage license cost?

The current Bay County marriage license fee is $86.

If you complete a qualifying premarital preparation course through a registered provider and provide the required completion certificate, the fee is reduced to $61.

Is there a waiting period?

For Florida residents, there is generally a 3-day waiting period before the marriage license becomes effective.

That waiting period is waived when the qualifying premarital preparation course requirements are met.

How long is the marriage license valid?

A Florida marriage license is valid for 60 days. That means your ceremony must take place within that period.

Planning a Florida vacation wedding?

If you're coming to Panama City or the surrounding area to get married, don't leave the marriage-license process until the last minute.

Take care of your license requirements, plan your ceremony, and then enjoy the moment you've been waiting for.
