What If My Document Doesn’t Have a Notary Section?

It is a question that comes up more often than you might think:

“My document needs to be notarized, but I don't see anywhere for the notary to sign. What do I do?”

The answer is: don't guess.

A document that needs notarization may already contain a notarial certificate, but sometimes the document does not include one.

First, confirm what is required

If your document does not contain a notarial certificate, contact the person or organization that prepared the document or will receive it.

Depending on the situation, that could be:

  • An attorney

  • The document preparer

  • A title or real estate company

  • A government agency

  • A financial institution

  • Another organization receiving the document

Ask what type of notarization is required and whether a specific notarial certificate must be used.

What a notary can—and cannot—do

A notary can perform an authorized notarial act when the legal requirements for that act are met.

However, a notary should not decide which notarial certificate you need based on what the document is about, and a notary cannot provide legal advice about your document.

If you need help determining what legal document or notarial act is appropriate, that question should be directed to the appropriate professional or organization.

What to do before your mobile notary appointment

Before your appointment, make sure you have:

✔️ The complete document

✔️ The appropriate signer or signers present

✔️ Acceptable identification available

✔️ Any required witnesses

✔️ Confirmation of what notarial act is required if the document does not contain a notarial certificate

Taking a few minutes to confirm these details beforehand can help your appointment go much more smoothly.
