Child Travel Consent Forms Notarization: What Parents Should Know Before Traveling

Planning a family vacation, cruise, or trip for your child? Along with packing and making travel arrangements, it's important to check whether any additional paperwork is needed when a child travels without both parents or legal guardians.

A child travel consent form or written parental authorization may be required in certain situations. Understanding the requirements before departure can help you avoid last-minute surprises.

When Might a Child Travel Consent Form Be Needed?

Travel consent documentation may be relevant when:

  • A child travels internationally with only one parent.

  • A child travels with grandparents, relatives, family friends, or another adult who is not their legal parent or guardian.

  • A destination country or travel provider requires written authorization from a parent or legal guardian.

Requirements are not identical for every trip. The U.S. Department of State advises travelers to check destination-specific requirements because some countries require formal consent from a non-traveling parent.

Does the Form Need to Be Notarized?

Sometimes. Certain countries and travel providers require a signed and notarized consent letter, while requirements vary depending on the circumstances.

For example, cruise lines may have their own forms and documentation rules when a minor travels without a parent or legal guardian.

Before scheduling a notarization, contact your airline, cruise line, or other relevant authority and confirm:

  • Whether a consent letter is required

  • Whether a specific form must be used

  • Which parent or guardian must sign

  • Whether notarization is required

  • Whether additional supporting documents are needed

A notary can perform the appropriate notarial act, but cannot guarantee that a travel provider or government authority will accept the completed paperwork.

What Should You Do Before Your Appointment?

Once you confirm that notarization is required, gather the form and review the instructions provided by the requesting organization.

Let your mobile notary know what document needs notarization and where the appointment will take place. The signer must personally appear before the notary for the notarization.

Remember to leave enough time before your departure to address any additional requirements.
