What Happens Before I Notarize Your Document?
Behind the Stamp: What Happens Before I Notarize Your Document?
When most people think about notarization, they picture a signature followed by a notary stamp. But the stamp is actually one of the last steps in the process.
A professional notarization begins well before the seal touches the page.
🖋️ Step 1: Identifying the Signer
One of the first responsibilities of a notary is verifying the identity of the person signing.
The signer must provide acceptable identification according to Florida notarial requirements. This helps establish that the person appearing before the notary is the person named in the document.
đź“„Â Step 2: Reviewing the Notarial Certificate
The notary determines what type of notarial act is being requested—such as an acknowledgment or jurat—and makes sure the appropriate certificate is completed.
A notary does not choose the legal wording of a document or provide legal advice. The notary's role is to properly perform the requested notarial act.
👤 Step 3: Confirming the Signer Is Present and Willing
The signer must personally appear before the notary as required for the particular notarial act. The notary also needs to be satisfied that the signer is signing voluntarily and understands what they are doing.
✍️ Step 4: Completing the Notarial Act
Once the necessary requirements have been met, the notary completes the appropriate certificate, signs the notarial record, and applies the official notary seal.
That is when the familiar stamp finally makes its appearance.
🔏 The Stamp Is Only Part of the Process
That small seal represents the completion of a process that requires attention to detail and adherence to Florida's notarial requirements.
At Magnolia Signature Services, I take that responsibility seriously.
Whether you need a document notarized at home, at your workplace, or another convenient location, my goal is to make the process professional, straightforward, and convenient.
